Tanning Salons:

Who are your customers and why do they tan?

Tanning Salons: Why your customers love to tan?

A tanning salon touches many people in many ways and understanding the impact of the overall experience on the client is paramount.

The new customer always wants something from the salon but which they don't always ask for in so many words. What is it they want exactly? Of course the customer wants a tan but what exactly 'a tan' means to them, only they can say. Even if they can't put it into words, the client always has an expectation in mind before coming in. For example, a quick tan, a real nice looking tan, for a party or wedding, before - holiday tan, a boost, house-wives just wanting to keep looking good, the SAD syndrome, when you're cold, to look good and glamorous, look good-feel good.

Tanning Salons: Why not increase customer awareness

Since tanning salons usual standards require tanners to be over 16, the group of people that normally enter the salons are aged between 16 and 50 years and mostly female. Some salons are now reporting a 50% increase in the attendance on the over 50's even 70's to 80's. Tanning salons I've looked at, I would say, the main reason for these trends is awareness/attitude from the salon towards the perspective client.

Many tanning salons don't seem to 'welcome' the older generation or attract them through thoughtful advertising even in the window or in their greeting of them or even to in some way let them know that's it OK to tan especially considering the Solectronic tanning health bed is now available. The same holds for attitude to males.

Tanning Salons miss lots of opportunities due to lack of awareness of customers need's upon entering on this 'new venture' and the need for reassurance and encouragement, discreetly. Also because the trend of 'tanning is good for your health' due to more scientific findings and a overall awareness within the manufacturing industry on health and safety, the ill healthy - because of skin conditions such as psoriasis and acne and joint and bone conditions; there is slight increase in sunbed use for these reasons.
(Tanning Salons used to belong to the 20-35's age group.)

Tanning Salon Trends: The latest changes

The actual advances in a Tanning Salons experience are phenomenal-there is a disco tanning experience being born now. Beds with music, body cooling, air conditioning, comfort design, luxury designed, stand up tanning, healthy tanning.

Many tanning salons now integrate various beauty aspects for clients. For example a hairdresser may sport a sunbed/nails sideline or aromatherapy/ reflexology/ massage. Any combinations are being found in the high street salons now or in gyms or health clubs or leisure centres. It seems the tanning experience can be designed around people and their needs to give the feel good - pampering phenomena of their day.
