 There
are 3 types of light:
• Visible
• IR ---Infrared
• UV ----Ultraviolet
All these areas of light are used in Tanning-----meaning indoor or
outdoor. The body receives this ‘light’ and is absorbed into the body.
The body is a whole. The body absorbs this ‘light’ through the skin.
Then begins the tanning response from the body.
There are subtle differences between the sunlight and the light from
the sunbed. You can tell this when you look at the sun and the lamps
in the sunbed; which you don’t do unless wearing eye-protection. The
visible light in sunlight is stronger. Also the Infrared, the heat
portion is stronger. UV light is the same apart from the obvious differences
e.g. distance from equator, season and time of day.
Sunlight, before it reaches the earth contains all types of Electromagnetic
radiation. This name is derived from the electrical and magnetic fields
that travel from their source in the form of a wave and in a wavelength.
When you feel the heat of the sun you are feeling the Infrared waves.
The primary source of energy on earth is sunlight. To be underexposed
or overexposed is now known to be a danger to our health. We know
better than ever before that sunburn whilst exposed to the UV light
is very harmful. We also know now, better than ever before that not
getting any UV light or not getting enough shall we say is very harmful
for us also. [This fact is so recognised now that eventually all lighting
will be changed in indoor areas especially places of work where people
have to spend long hours under artificial light.] The problem with
underexposure is that the immune system becomes less effective, leaving
us vulnerable to illness and disease. Also, our Vitamin D reserves
disappear, but more interestingly the body cannot synthesise the vital
nutrients necessary for our health when there is a lack of the UV
light in our climate.
So the ‘feel good factor’ isn’t just a good sounding phrase! It is
our own body’s natural reaction to all the right processes taking
place within our bodies because of the sun’s effects on them. That’s
why, especially in the colder, sunless months in this climate, the
sunbed is a safe place to go and our body’s grateful response is a
long, loud aaaaaaaaaaaAAAAAHHHH!!!!!
